February 27 - Independence Day

Hello!

We are celebrating Independence Day here in the Dominican Republic. On February 27, 1844 the Dominican Republic gained it's independence from Haiti. (It had previously gained independence twice from Spain and was also ruled later by the United States and became independent from them in 1924.) We are thankful for the opportunity to live in this wonderful country!

There is no school today and many businesses are closed. We have been invited to have pizza with some Dominican friends although I don't think that's the typical way to celebrate the day. I wouldn't be surprise if we see some fireworks!

Have a great day!

Best Friends

Hello!

My computer is back and so are pictures!

Look at these two best friends making faces with their food.

The little fairy on the right has been sick and is staying in the hospital for two days. Please pray for her!

Thank you!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Hello!

!Feliz dia del amor y la amistad! Translated from Spanish that means, "Happy day of love and friendship!" Isn't that a good way to explain Valentine's Day?

Kids at our school were allowed to wear different coloured clothes instead of their uniforms. A lot of them chose red. Some classes made hearts to pin on their shirts with words about love and friendship. My daughter's class read a story about a family who chose love over money and happiness and, in the end, got all three.

The flower stands on the sides of the streets in town were much bigger than usual. They were also selling strawberries which are in season right now. They are my favourite! I didn't see any Valentine cards but we don't usually see cards here for any occasion. I've heard that we have some coming in the mail from family in Canada but, since we only get mail once very two weeks, they have not arrived yet.

Valentine cards or not, I hope that you've enjoyed celebrating love and friendship today.

Happy Valentine's Day!

The Nicest Friend

Hello!

My little girl's best friend is the nicest friend in the world. I could give lots of reasons like she's sweet, kind, polite, and respectful. She's fun to talk to and play with. But one of the main reasons I say that is because she's nice to the little brothers that want to tag along. She's everybody's friend. They run out to give her a hug when she comes to visit and even the baby can say her name. She doesn't lock them out of the bedroom and leave them out like other friends have. She involves them and cares for them. She's like another big sister. When my computer is working I'll show you a picture of her. Until then, let's work on being the nicest friends we can be.

Have a great day!

Fruit of the Spirit - Love

Hello!

Over the past few months, I have been doing a Bible study with some other ladies on the Fruit of the Spirit. The first in the list found in Galatians 5:22 is love. It is easy to love people who love us and are nice to us but God wants us to love like He does--unconditionally, no matter how we feel. The Greek word is agape. God loved us while we were still sinners (Romans 5:8) and sent Jesus to die for us before we ever believed in Him. When the Holy Spirit lives in us we can love others with God's agape love.

I will never forget being at an outdoor wedding where a boy quoted 1 Corinthians 13 in pouring rain with thunder and lightening over the lake behind him. Nothing could stop him from loudly reciting the "love chapter" that is all about agape love. It is the kind of love that we need to be reminded of over and over again.

My challenge for you (and me) is to read 1 Corinthians 13 this week. Pray for God's help to love your family and friends with His agape love this Valentine's Day. I'd love to hear how it goes!

Love, Marcie
